NHL store opens in NYC

As part of Gary Bettman's continual quest to NBA-ify the league, the NHL Powered by Reebok Store (seriously, that's its name) opens today in Manhattan.

Highlights of the store include:
  • XM Satellite Radio on-air studio
  • In-store Starbucks
  • A floating Rbk hockey stick sculpture, constructed of over 400 sticks
  • An ice wall, made of real ice
  • Larger than life graphics that highlight NHL players (ooooh!)
And of course, all the overpriced apparel and memorabilia you can shake a stick at.

I visited the store on 6-2-08 while I was in NY.

Overall, it was a cool place to visit and spend some time browsing around. I was impressed by the hockey stick chandelier, the 32 mannequins dressed in NHL jerseys, the flat screen TVs playing hockey highlights, The Orange County Chopper with the NHL theme, and the large player portraits.

I was, however, disappointed with the overall selection of merchandise from teams other than those from the NY area. As a Florida Panthers fan, I'm used to getting no respect. But I thought a store that puts itself out there as the NHL mecca would've done a better job of recognizing that this league has 32 teams. I know they're there to make a profit, but thousands of people from all across North America visit that city every day and many of them make the trek to the NHL store to relish the coolness of all things hockey and to buy merchandise from their favorite team. It would save a lot of angst and disappointment if Reebok would just come out and tell you what to really expect (a load of Rangers crap and very little else).

I had a good time visiting the store. I was there for a little over 45 minutes checking everything out. In the end I spent $33 on two Panthers keychains and two Panthers luggage tags...

I'm with ya, vanmurph (although last time I checked the league only has 30 teams). I wasn't very impressed by the store either.

If you're back in NYC, I'd suggest Cosby's , located at Madison Square Garden. Not as flashy as the league's effort, but is better stocked despite being a quarter of the size of the NHL Store. For Rangers fans, it's an absolute must. Where else can you get a Ryan Hollweg jersey off the rack?

Yeah, I wrote 32 not once, but TWICE...

Wanna know the real pisser? I copied and pasted this comment into about a half dozen blogs in the span of a few minutes... :o(

I'll have to check out the store at the Garden the next time I'm in NY. I'm generally there a couple of times a month!
